Do you know how common cellulite is? An estimated 80 to 90 percent of all women deal with the cosmetic condition, which causes skin—primarily on the thighs and buttocks—to appear dimpled or lumpy. Men can get it, too! There are many myths about what causes cellulite, as well as products and devices claiming to treat it. When it comes to truly effective cellulite reduction, our Portland-based team at Aesthetic Medicine uses proven technology that helps make the skin look tighter and feel smoother!

Although cellulite is remarkably common, many people don’t know what causes the unwanted dimpling—and wrongly assume that excess fat or being overweight is to blame. While fat cells do play a role in the cosmetic condition, there are actually several contributing factors.
Tough bands of collagen known as septae tether the underside of the skin’s surface to the layers below. Fat cells surround and are “partitioned” by these septae, so when fat cells grow larger, they begin to crowd together and bulge out. This crowded fat pushes up against the surface of the skin—but every point where septae are connected remains fixed in place, creating a little dimple. The little dimples are even more obvious when the skin itself is thin.
Genetics also play a role, so if an immediate family member has cellulite, chances are good that you will develop it, too. Hormone fluctuations can further make the problem more visible since they cause changes in skin quality, fat storage, and more.
Over-the-counter creams and similar products may claim to be effective cellulite reduction treatments, but they actually tend to very little—if anything—to help with the problem. Similarly, healthy lifestyle choices like a balanced diet and routine exercise may seem like they would be good cellulite reduction strategies, but reducing fat and building muscle can only do so much. Smaller fat cells means less crowding below the surface, but exercise and diet don’t physically remove fat cells and don’t meaningfully change skin texture.
Microneedling can be a helpful cellulite reduction option because the tiny needles used in the treatment trigger changes that directly improve the look of the skin’s surface. Each channel created by a fine needle prompts wound healing and collagen generation, thickening the skin and leading to an overall smoother look.
An especially effective cellulite reduction treatment is Exilis, which is an entirely non-invasive device that pairs ultrasound and radiofrequency energies for noticeable results. The dual energies generate heat below the surface, which raises fat cells’ temperature to a point they can’t survive. Natural processes then gradually clear out the dead cells, leading to a reduction in volume. Note that this cellulite reduction strategy is different from creating a calorie deficit through diet and exercise, since that lifestyle approach merely shrinks fat cells instead of removing them. Intact fat cells still take up space—and can grow larger again in the future.
Heat from an Exilis cellulite reduction treatment also stimulates cells to create new collagen, which accumulates, tightens the treatment area, and results in a thicker and smoother surface.
You don’t have to know which treatment you’d like before you come to us for help with dimpled thighs! Our team at Aesthetic Medicine will assess your skin at a private consultation, discuss your goals and medical history with you, and then ultimately work with you to choose an appropriate cellulite reduction plan. Our conversation will also include information about your specific treatment strategy, cellulite treatment cost, potential side effects, and other details.
Your results will depend on a variety of factors, including which cellulite treatment you get, your unique healing abilities, and more. That said, all patients can have some common expectations: Whether you go with microneedling, Exilis, or a combination of treatments paired with lifestyle changes, the results will take time to develop. Both the fat-reduction element and the collagen-creation process take time, so cellulite on the buttocks and thighs will become less noticeable over weeks and months. Multiple cellulite reduction treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve ideal results.
