When the skin is wounded, specialized cells create new collagen in response. This is an automatic repair process. RF microneedling uses the skin’s natural healing ability to improve texture and tone by triggering collagen creation that results in overall improvement. In fact, RF microneedling employs two different strategies to kickstart the process.
Microneedling itself induces collagen production by lightly creating thousands of incredibly tiny channels in the skin. The handheld device has 24 needles at the tip, each no larger in diameter than a human hair. The channels these needles create are considered wounds by the body, even though they are far too small to leave a lasting mark.
The collagen created to close these channels also serves to enhance the look and feel of the untouched surrounding tissue. This leads to a tighter appearance, firmer feel, and other benefits.
At Aesthetic Medicine, we use the Morpheus4 device for microneedling, which adds radiofrequency energy into the process. Each tiny needle also serves as a conduit to deliver the RF energy into deeper layers. This heats the skin below the surface for an even smoother look and enhanced collagen production.
Microneedling also encourages the production of elastin, a stretchy protein that helps to give the skin healthy elasticity. More elastin means the skin is better able to “snap back” firmly into place instead of hanging loose and lax.
Increased collagen and elastin production address a range of cosmetic issues, including poor tone and texture irregularities. The resulting tightening effect can also improve the look of fine lines.
Since microneedling encourages wound healing, the treatment is ideal for reducing the severity of certain scars. Creating new microchannels in scar tissues give the skin a “second chance” to make repairs, which can lead to less-noticeable scars.
Some patients find that microneedling can reduce general redness in the skin, making their complexion clearer and more even.
Down time is minimal following a Morpheus4 treatment, with your skin healing in the days after an RF microneedling session. Expect some redness, swelling, and sensitivity, so be sure to avoid any products that might irritate the area for at least a few days. Also, be sure to wear proper UV protection—including sunscreen—if going outdoors, since the needled skin will be especially sensitive to damage.
Patients may notice a healthy glow shortly after their treatment, but the true benefit comes from renewed collagen production that takes place in the weeks following a session. The collagen creation process takes time, but increasing levels of the protein will gradually restore structure and support where needed in the skin. Improved blood flow also helps to give the skin a healthier glow and radiance.
Results can last for a year—or even two or three—especially with proper care and maintenance. Repeat sessions can help to keep the skin looking smooth and radiant.

What Is Microneedling?
Your body has a natural healing capacity that is quite effective. Microneedling taps into this, stimulating the healing response for improvement in the look and texture of the skin. Microneedling involves a handheld device that uses tiny needles to puncture the skin lightly. Not all micro needling is made the same; here at Aesthetic Medicine, we use Morpheus.
The Morpheus has different depths, which are determined by the desired result. Not only does the Morpheus tighten, but it can also treat unwanted fat in the face. The microneedling device is composed of 24 tiny needles that penetrate the tissue. The body responds to these tiny pinpricks by increasing elastin and collagen production and increasing blood supply to the area. The result is better to tone, and texture as the body also heals flaws in the skin, limiting the look of fine lines, scarring, and redness.
The small size of the needles used in microneedling and the fact that they do not penetrate very far into the skin means the procedure should not hurt. We use a medical-grade dermal pen at Aesthetic Medicine to properly control treatment depth and safety. You can achieve excellent rejuvenating results without discomfort or downtime with microneedling treatment.
Most of our Lake Oswego patients report a healthy glow to their skin immediately after treatment. Because the process stimulates the body’s natural healing capabilities, complete healing will take some time. You will need follow-up treatments for the best results, and the number of treatments required will depend on how extensive your treatment needs are. Dr. Darm will help you plan for the correct number of follow-up appointments.
Our Lake Oswego team is dedicated to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals in the least invasive way possible. Microneedling is one of many non-invasive treatment options we provide. Schedule your consultation to discuss microneedling and other treatments to help you achieve your cosmetic goals, restore your self-confidence, and give you a glowing, youthful appearance.
